Youth mental health: supporting teenagers through times of emotional distress with Gwendoline Smith
This workshop will provide attendees with practical skills to support school age students through difficult emotional times. The skills are based in the cognitive behavioural science theory which is currently seen as the most effective methodology for youth issues such as anxiety and bullying.
Participants will be introduced to the unique language of cognitive theory and will receive valuable, practical information for interpreting the perceptual distortions that create adaptive difficulties for students. Each participant will receive extracts from Knowing, a book written for teenagers outlining strategies they can use to change their thinking and deal with issues.
The initial part of the day will be an introduction to the science of anxiety and the basic theory of the CBT methodology.
Participants will be provided with a toolkit of cognitive skills, applicable and user-friendly, that could be shared with teenagers to enable them to manage the spontaneous and overwhelming emotional outpouring.
